Small Business Saturday is a concentrated effort to get shoppers to frequent small businesses when shopping. This probably has limited success. The real advantage for small business is their position as the only game in town for many categories that consumers want. Since fashion jewelry and accessories is the focus of this blog, that will be the area we will cover. Here are three categories of merchandise that are somewhere between hard and impossible to find in the halls of the majors.
WIDE SELECTION OF HOLIDAY JEWELRY AT SMALL BUSINESS
Christmas parties and New Years Eve will create a frantic search for dresses and accessories that will stand out. Dresses will be everywhere in the big box stores. But what about the crystals and rhinestone jewelry to accessorize them? In this category, the majors are weak. Look at the showcases of leading department stores an you will see the selection is limited.
The place to find a wide selection of rhinestone and crystal jewelry that will be the perfect match for an outfit is small business—specialty shops that have a generous selection of sparkling jewelry for head-tuning looks.
From lavish crystal necklace sets that made their entrance into the formal jewelry market in 2013 to understated sets that appeal to more conservative shoppers, specialty stores in small business have the selection.
If shoppers prefer to accessorize with glamorous earrings rather than a necklace set, these same shops have plenty of options. And they also have a selection of bracelets to complete the look.
SMALL BUSINESS HAS QUALITY CHRISTMAS JEWELRY
There’s another aspect of Holiday jewelry—the Christmas jewelry that is part of those warm childhood memories that still bring joy. Classy Christmas jewelry is becoming an endangered species. Creating quality fashion jewelry is an art. From design to excellence in craftsmanship requires time and diligence. Many manufacturers feel the effort isn’t worthwhile for a short season. But small entrepreneurs are relentless in their search for exceptional items to please their customers.
One of the leaders in manufacturing quality fashion jewelry is “Best. Their Christmas line goes through all the processes of expensive sterling silver. Like many other exclusive lines, the only place to find this Christmas jewelry is small business locations.
“Best” has a signature process of stamping detailed designs form a thin sheet of metal. The jewelry has raised relief and a precisely cut plate seals the back just like sterling. Next comes plating, polishing, and sometimes color with epoxy. Most pieces are pendants that can also be worn as pins. When your customers buy this Christmas jewelry to give as gift, they are giving the next generation of quality collectibles.
ACCESSORIES IN THEMES—A SMALL BUSINESS EXCLUSIVE
Accessories in themes carry a message caring and sincerity. The giver took time to search for a gift that is really meaningful to the receiver.
Scarves in Themes
Scarves are an example. Oblong polyester scarves are a classy accessory with the look and feel of silk. Their popularity is timeless. While other scarves trend up and down, consumers never tire of these oblongs. They come in an infinite number of prints, but one strong feature about these scarves in themes.
Searching the site turns up major categories of these scarves in religious themes, music themes, and nearly every seasonal theme. Other themes include floral, pets, fleur-de-lis, occupations, and animals from horses to elephants.
Since this is Christmas, scarves for the season are certainly very popular. The poinsettia scarf shown really connects with consumers.
Ties in Themes
What about gifts for men? The traditional gift has always been ties. Every year Dad gets a tie. This year it can be special with theme ties. Choose from ties for occupations, sports, sea life, gaming, as well as seasonal ties. There are entire categories dedicated to American flag ties and Christian ties. Fleur-de-lis ties are a favorite men’s gift in Louisiana.
How many times have you heard—it’s hard to shop for men? Now you can find something meaningful in themes for men. Only small business offers all these themes in ties.
THE SOURCE OF SPECIALTY GIFTS IS SMALL BUSINESS
Anyone searching for a specialty gift has to think of small business. In many cases, it is the only place to find these items. One good example is church hats. A favorite gift for moms that wear a hat to church on Sunday is church hats. We have been in the wholesale jewelry and accessory business for 28 years and it was true even before that.
Where in the world can a person go to buy Mom a nice winter church hat for Christmas? Who is going to have a selection? You have to find a specialty shop handling these hats. And that is going to be a small business location. They have the shapes, colors, and styles that gives the shopper options.
This is one example. Small business is the source for nearly every niche and specialty item. When the Holidays are over, consumers still need small business. Who has the selection of prom jewelry, pageant and dance accessories, Mardi Gras items, and a big selection of Easter hats? Small business not only supplies consumers’ needs, it also provides more than half the jobs in America. It is great to have these industrious entrepreneurs with their enduring creativity. They are the hardy breed that battles every obstacle striving to survive and succeed.

Are we overlooking some fashion jewelry items that have high consumer interest? One of those categories is brooches. Whenever we think of brooches, Grandma’s jewelry box comes to mind. Yes, that is part of it, but when we are done with this blog hopefully we will see that Grandma’s good taste in jewelry is only the tip of the iceberg.
THE GOLDEN AGE OF COSTUME JEWELRY
Since we mentioned that jewelry box, let’s start there. Collectors consider the era of fabulous fashion jewelry to be between the 1930s and 1960s. Outstanding fashion jewelry houses competed during this era with designs that were unquestionably the most exquisite in the history of fashion jewelry. Deservingly so, this period is called The Golden Age of Costume Jewelry.
Brooches are big part of the jewelry produced in this era. Consumers’ infatuation with these designs prompts today’s manufacturers to create brooches inspired by The Golden Era. Crystal brooches are big a part of these inspirations. The brooch shown seems to be an inspiration of designers working mainly with crystals like Eisenberg. He was originally from Austria and created an infinite number of glamorous designs relying on Austrian crystals.
Actually, a number of designers from this era were from Austria—Nettie Rosenstein, Hattie Carnegie, and more. You can read their stories in Costume Jewelers by Joanne Dubbs Ball. She covers the era in an interesting and professional way.
This fantastic era of costume jewelry uses themes from nature profusely. Flowers, birds, sea life, animal life, insects—they are all included. Today’s designers find inspiration in these designs that have timeless appeal to consumers.
WHOLESALE BROOCHES FOR BRIDAL
Brooches for bridal are nothing new. Designs incorporating pearls are preferred. They are a popular bridesmaid gift.
What is new is bridal bouquets made from brooches. Use images to search for them on line. These are a real work of art from the 21st Century.
Nearly every manufacturer of brooches has some seasonal brooches in their line. Even women that think brooches are not their style have to admit they like a classy Christmas pin. Christmas pins are the leader in seasonal brooches. And they have been in the market for many years. Collecting Rhinestone and Colored Jewelry shows vintage Christmas tree pins valued between $75 and $110.
Recent Christmas jewelry has produced fabulous pins in resin. Many cute designs have amazing detail like the gingerbread house pin shown.
PENDANTS DOUBLING AS BROOCHES
For the last twenty-five years, “Best” has produced a magnificent line of pendants that double as pins. These are the collectibles of the future. His process is intense, considering we are talking about fashion jewelry.
The technique works mainly with metals. Each piece begins with a thin sheet of metal stamped with raised relief to create amazing detail. Plaiting, polishing, and sometimes epoxy for color follow. Yes, they do seasonal jewelry including Christmas jewelry. The pendant shown is an example. It doubles as a pin.
Themes are almost endless in this line. And most pendants double as pins. This classy jewelry can deliver a theme— everything from magnolias to motorcycles. .
MARDI GRAS PINS
As the end of the year draws near, New Orleans and many other areas begin to think of Mardi Gras. The most popular jewelry for this occasion is Mardi Gras pins. As consumers get into the Mardi Gras spirit, they are shopping for pins with local retailers. This jewelry is also a popular favor for Mardi Gras royalty and members of Krewes attending balls.
Wholesale brooches can be fun, glamorous, elegant, and whimsical. These brooches accent an outfit from head to toe—from hats to shoes. Theme brooches announce what the wearer cares about. And those brooches in Grandma’s jewelry box show the height of good taste. Think about wholesale brooches when stocking for Christmas shoppers.

In some ways, wholesale scarves are a sleeper. They don’t get a lot of fanfare and yet they are important in accessorizing—even more important at Christmas. Why at Christmas? Because scarves are a tasteful way to accessorize for the Holidays. They also make easy gifts to give.
Still scarves seem to lack stability. New styles constantly pop up and disappear within a few years. Sometimes they are gone in one season. However, there are stable wholesale scarves that are timeless.
WHOLESALE SCARVES THAT ARE TIMELESS AND TASTEFUL
Wholesale scarves have been in our line for more than 25 years. The first scarves we carried are still the top selling ones today. THIS IS STABILITY! We are talking about polyester oblongs. They have gorgeous prints, solid colors, themes—just about everything you want in a scarf.
The polyester scarves have a silky feel. Most measure 13 inches wide and 60 inches long. Your customers can wear them long, wrap them closer to the neck, or tie them in bows or rosettes. Wendy’s Lookbook will show you 25 ways to wear them in 4 ½ minutes.
These oblongs also have something for any time of the year, for every holiday and season. Of course, the season that is important right now is Christmas. Christmas scarves have prints ranging from elegant to fun. The poinsettia scarf shown is hard to beat for elegance.
On the fun side, Christmas scares have cute themes like the snowman scarf on the left.
Beyond Christmas, wholesale scarves in polyester cover nearly every holiday. The first event after Christmas is Valentine’s Day followed by Mardi Gras. Yes, there are oblongs for both these occasions, and for Easter, St. Patrick’s Day, and Halloween.
WHOLESALE SCARVES IN THEMES
These timeless scarves also fill many needs in themes. Often church groups and choirs need matching scarves in a religious theme. This theme has an entire sub-category dedicated to it.
Patriotic events and holidays call for Americana prints with stars and stripes. Choral groups, theatres, and choirs want music themes. New Orleans and Louisiana residents love fleur-de-lis scarves.
In addition, there are many other themes like occupations for teachers, dentists, and doctors. There are garden themes like butterflies and blossoms, also safari themes like zebras, elephants, and animal prints. These wholesale scarves are truly versatile. That is the main reason they make great Christmas gifts.
SCARVES THAT DELIVER COLOR
Polyester oblongs come in solid colors, but another popular scarf that delivers color is pashminas. Originally, the soft undercoat of pashmina goats found high in the Himalayas provided the wool for these scarves. One goat shed 3 to 5 ounces of this sort undercoat every spring. No doubt, this was an expensive process.
Later herds were started in Mongolia’ reducing the price. Today these scarves wholesale for under $6 so you know we are not talking the same material and procedure. Still pashmina scarves today have a very soft feel and are excellent for providing solid color. These scarves first became popular about five years ago and now are a household word. That makes them an excellent choice to go with polyesters in your scarf display.
Most retailers find it hard to keep up with trendy scarves. Many are a one-season flash in the pan. If you have talent at accessorizing with scarves and can show your customer, trendy scarves are for you. If not, watch Wendy’s Lookbook video with a link above and you will know all you need to know to sell polyesters.
If you want trendy scarves, visit that category on our site and you will find a variety in Ikat prints, rayons, and boho for the sixties look. There are also crinkle scarves, animal prints, and paisley prints. Wholesale scarves serve a lot of markets and satisfy a number of customers. They are important as Christmas gifts. When stocking for the Holidays, don’t overlook this key item that never makes a big splash, but always sells.

Something new is happening in wholesale crystal jewelry in 2013. Accessories Magazine labels the movement Estate Update. We are talking about dramatic designs in wholesale crystal jewelry. These statement pieces are quickly populating showcases across the nation.
This is new in 2013. In 2012, these dramatic looks in crystal necklace sets were not found or were rare. One catalyst for these dramatic designs is the improved quality of acrylic stones. Another is the improved quality of Chinese crystals. Together these stones can produce elaborate crystal necklace sets with wholesale prices below $40–most of them below $30. Suddenly rivals of The Royal Jewels are affordable for everyone.
START OF DRAMATIC WHOLESALE CRYSTAL JEWELRY TREND
Crystal bracelets and earrings ushered in dramatic looks. The bracelet shown is typical. You might think this is nothing new, and you are right. However, bracelets and earrings planted the seed for dramatic crystal necklaces.
We can look back to 2012 for crystal necklace sets using large stones in dramatic designs. These first sets used all acrylic stones. They were eye catching and still sell. The set pictured is an example. The vast improvement in acrylic stone quality made this possible. It was nearly impossible to distinguish acrylic stones from lead crystal stones. Retailers stocked this wholesale crystal jewelry that quickly grabbed the attention of consumers. However, the developments in wholesale crystal jewelry that came in 2013 stole their thunder.
In the first half of 2013, this wholesale crystal jewelry began to show up. These crystal sets included multicolor designs. The necklace sets often used garden themes. Designs were breath taking and prices so affordable.
SECOND GENERATION OF WHOLESALE CRYSTAL NECKLACE SETS
By August, Accessories Magazine included them in their “What to Buy” section. The next generation of wholesale crystal necklace sets was showing up for fall. Designs with all clear stones or iridescent stones stormed the industry. The iridescent choker set shown was top on the list of popularity.
Wholesale prices continued to shock—not because they were expensive, but because they were so affordable. The dramatic crystal necklace set shown carries a wholesale price under $20. Now everyone could have the Red Carpet look for balls and Holiday.
WILL THE DRAMATIC CRYSTAL JEWELRY TREND LAST?
No doubt, dramatic crystal jewelry will command attention the rest of this year and into 2014. It’s more than eye pleasing. It’s captivating. This crystal jewelry grabs attention with luxurious design. It shocks again with low wholesale prices. It is new, beautiful, and affordable. That makes it irresistible. Innovation is the key to popularity. New designs will keep it in the jet stream. When fresh designs no longer shock the sense of beauty, it will lose its luster to a certain degree and settle into the category of crystal jewelry as another option.
