When retailers prepare their fashion jewelry displays, they want attention- grabbing items that are in today’s trends or breath-taking beauty in classic designs.  Seldom do you see hematite in these displays.  Hardly ever is it in the showcases of the upscale department stores and you never see it strutting the fashion runways or in the fashion magazine.  No, hematite jewelry is a quiet seller that just keeps selling under the radar.

What is the attraction to hematite?  First, what a bargain hematite is with that steel grey color shining with a high luster!  Most hematite jewelry wholesales below $2.00 and still it has artistic design and the cold feel you get in genuine gemstone jewelry

At this price, can it be real?  Wikipedia says “hematite is the mineral form of iron oxide (Fe2  O3)”.  Color can be black to steel grey, brown to reddish brown, or red.  Because it can be red, the Greeks named hematite after their word for blood.  This is the genuine hematite mining produces and, while not expensive, would still cost far more if beads and pendants were carved from the mineral.

So then what is the hematite used in inexpensive jewelry?  It is a form of iron oxide very close to hematite mined in its natural state.  Beads and pendants consist of the grindings and dust of hematite fused together.  The easiest way to distinguish the two is what gemologists call a streak test.  Scratch the item on ceramic and the streak left by hematite in its natural state will be red while hematite fused together will be grey.  Other than that, qualities are very similar.  Inexpensive hematite jewelry has the same colder than room temperature feel as hematite mined in its original state.  Also both are iron oxide so both will attract a magnet, although the opposite is not true—hematite in its original form cannot be magnetized.

The advantage of fused hematite is labor saved by casting instead of carving.  And this brings us to the second reason hematite sell so well under the radar.  An amazing assortment of bead shapes together with endless pendants allows designers to create an enormous quantity of fabulous looks.  The pendants can be geometrics, hearts, crosses, or endless themes like dolphins, penguins, angels, or anchors.  With all these themes, something is going to pull the heartstrings of a shopper.   And that is just one more reason that hematite jewelry sells.

One more strong selling point is a popular belief that hematite has a healing quality.  This is not medically proven just as copper bracelets were never medically proven to relief arthritis pain.  Still many have a positive experience wearing hematite jewelry for pain relief.  When you see a booth dedicated to hematite in a mall or flea market, many of the customers are shopping for jewelry that relieves pain.

Now think about how inexpensive hematite jewelry is.  How easy it would be to put a nice display of hematite together in your shop.  Even a hundred dollars worth of hematite could make a statement.  So give some thought to setting up an area for hematite—group it together so it tells a story—and get a nice markup because most customers will be surprised by how good it looks and how affordable it is.

Tired of the sultry heat of summer?  Well fall is coming and Halloween is just ten weeks away.  So one way to build some excitement in your store during the muggy days of August is to introduce some extraordinary art in masks that will grab customers’ attention—and do it before all the discounters roll out their Halloween and try to steal your thunder.

Before we begin reviewing the fabulous new designs in masks, let’s see how important Halloween is to retail sales.  The National Retail Federation keeps track of this kind of stuff and the 2010 results are online.  What category do you think led Halloween sales in 2010?  If you answered kids’ costumes, that is 4th.  Candy was first, decorations were second, and adult costumes finished third.  That means there is a lot more Halloween parties for adults than we would have imagined and that is good for us because they will need masks.

The NFR reports that adult parties are growing every year and 2009 accounted for 6 billion in sales with 2010 being bigger.   In a fragile economy, this is a huge help.  Combine new arrivals in masks with some of the timeless designs already in our line and you can capture part of these sales.

Ladies masks this season will take your customers’ breath with a maple leaf design that tastefully combines crystals, glitter, cupped maple leaves, and a special technique in painting that gives an antiqued crackled effect to these Venetian style masks that come individually boxed with clear plastic tops.

A second Venetian style mask using maple leaves also comes individually boxed.  The same special technique of painting delivers the crackle design with maple leaves extending from one end and a feather arrangement on the other.  Both designs are eye masks that can be worn while eating or drinking at a party and both have color choices.

Want a ladies mask with all the mystique of masquerade?  A new lace mask in black certainly fills the bill.  The eye mask shapes to the face with lace blended with a hazy film that is semi-transparent.  Beaded drops are spaced along the bottom of the mask.  Price is very reasonable and these masks need to be part of your Halloween display because they certainly look the part.

In Venetian style masks, a new full-face jester offers all the artistic craftsmanship anyone could want in a mask at a price that will make your customers look twice.  While not as convenient for enjoying food or drink at a party, these jester masks are so outstanding that customers will have a hard time passing them by at these prices.  They also have a loop that lets them double as wall hangings.

Sometimes the host provides masks for their guests so they need something that is attractive, yet very affordable.  New arrivals have a variety of masquerade masks that will work for Halloween parties.  For men, nothing is more popular or more recognized than the domino mask.  You know this mask.  It is the lone ranger mask that is also worn by several other super heroes and used in cartoons to denote burglars and bad guys.  During the Renaissance, the mask was accompanied with a hood that looked much like the garb a priest wore for warmth.  The root word for the domino mask is the French word for priest.  These domino masks sandwich flexible mylar between thin layers of fabric for quality that is still inexpensive.

Perhaps the most exciting new masquerade mask for women is the glittery butterfly mask.  They have the shape of a butterfly with wings spread and plenty of sparkle.  Best of all cost is $2.20 wholesale and price drops with quantity.  So your customers that are hosting parties can still get a great buy even after your markup.

Summer is nearly over and won’t be missed unless you are a summer tourist destination.  Fall is around the corner and that should translate into better sales.   Why not start the excitement now with knockout items customers will be looking for shortly.

August is hotter than blazes but customers are asking retailers when fall hats are coming and, in turn, they are asking the wholesalers.  Well, dress hats are beginning to arrive with more coming at the end of the month.  The first arrivals include some elegant looks in velvet and wool felt.

One developing trend is inspiration provided by the sixties.  This was the era that closed the necessity of hats for things as simple as going shopping.  Every woman donned a hat going to church and men didn’t leave the house without their fedora.  Hats frequented the silver screen and these images are still a hallmark for elegance.  So when headwear looks for classic inspiration, the sixties are a natural choice as we will see with some of the new arrivals for fall.

Let’s begin with velvet hats and a style that returns from last year.  The introduction of velvet dress hats in 2010 met with great success, especially the style shown that has a fairly rigid body and high crown that angles to one side.  A lavish decoration of satin ruffles and velvet loops are offset to the low side and layers of wide satin surround the crown.  A review of wholesale hats for last fall shows this dress hat was a leading seller, so it returns for a second season with an additional color of green added.  The track record indicates your customers will appreciate this headwear that is excellent as a church hat.

Velvet also provides a soft hat for the fall season with a four-inch brim that rolls as it comes together in the front, creating two rosettes.  Here is a versatile winter hat that can match an outfit when going to work or out to eat as well as a church hat that is moderately dressy.  While not as dressy as other fall hats for church, the wide range of applications for this headwear will still have it selling well.

Wool felt also provides a moderately dressy hat using a tailored deep crown design from the sixties.  A leatherette cord wraps the crown twice forming a haphazard band while a large flower motif in wool felt decorates one side.  Like the hat above this headwear has the versatility to accessorize an outfit for work, dining out, shopping, or church wear.  The hat comes in the popular winter white color.

Wool felt is the traditional material for fall dress hats and another new arrival uses felt to provide a classic design with lavish trim that makes an exceptional church hat.  This stunning design has a squared crown and 4 inch brim that first angles down and then turns up.  The decoration offsets to one side with coiled velvet ribbon extending from abundant satin ruffles nestled in satin leaves.  This headwear is sure to be a winner in your millinery selection, especially for women searching for church hats.

More conservative in wool felt dress hats is a stunning pillbox that reminds of Jackie O and the sixties.  The dressy hat has a C indention that dips in the front and an exciting wool felt blossom layered on a horsehair bow decorating one side.  Three colors are available in these pillboxes that satisfy your customers that want more conservative church hats.

Finally, polypropylene hats that shimmer with a blend of lurex provide all-season headwear in gold and silver.  The wonderful quality of these hats is they transcend seasons so there is no limit to the selling season.  Fall Dress Hats includes an untrimmed lampshade that can be decorated as well as a trimmed hat in this material.  The trimmed style has low profile with squared crown and rolled down brim.  Decoration uses the same material to create a pattern of leaves and a ribbon-like band that spirals as it spills down the brim.

Build some early excitement in your millinery selection by including some fall dress hats and keep an eye on the website category because the next three weeks will see many more arrivals.

If we look back to the 1980s, we see faux pearl bridal jewelry as the dominant wedding day jewelry for the walk down the aisle.  Since then rhinestone has seen quite a drop in price and as it became more affordable, it increased in popularity for brides.  While this happened, faux pearl jewelry became scarcer.  Well, some manufacturers recognized the void in the market and reintroduced traditional looks in faux pearl jewelry, which is quickly catching on again.

FAUX PEARL BRIDAL JEWELRY

The traditional faux pearl jewelry is plastic pearl pearlized with a quality coating that provides nearly the same luster as the real thing.  The most familiar bridal sets in faux pearl are a single strand of pearls with a drop in the center, matched with earrings that usually copy the drop.  Length is usually adjustable and numerous choices in design are available with the drop changing the look. Is there any more popular design than a pendant of faux pearl surrounded by small crystals?

HAND-KNOTTED FAUX PEARL NECKLACES

Hand-knotted pearls carry bridal jewelry to an even more realistic look.  Each faux pearl is separated by a knot the same way genuine pearls are strung.  Usually these are single strands of pearl that provide simple elegance indistinguishable from the real thing.

GLASS PEARL BRIDAL JEWELRY

Glass pearls offer a quality option with weight that clearly separates the bridal jewelry from plastic pearl.  Glass pearl provides the same luster and is often provides pearl jewelry ideal for the mother of the bride.  Glass pearl necklace sets also make wonderful church accessories or necklace sets for special events like teas or dining out.

ABS PEARL JEWELRY

ABS pearl was practically an unknown that is gaining popularity today.  Still, consumers may see pearl advertised as ABS, but have no idea what it is.  The letters stand for acrylonitrile butadiene styrene, which is sometimes called ABS polymer.  It is a thermoplastic with impact resistance and a flawless shiny finish.  ABS is capable of injection molding, which enables the production of beads that many say are very close to the finish of real pearls. We are receiving ABS pearl soon to be available to our customer base.

FRESHWATER PEARLS

Freshwater pearl is genuine pearl that usually has irregular shapes and various colors.  They are often farmed using freshwater mussels with each mussel producing 24 to 32 freshwater pearls at a time.  That makes freshwater pearls far more abundant for jewelry making than cultivated pearls.  Bridal jewelry in freshwater pearl adds perceivable value to the accessories for the wedding day, but cost is also higher, which can be a burden with all the expense a modern day wedding calls for.

BRIDAL EARRINGS

Most of the time, bridal jewelry brings to mind the necklace and earring sets worn on the wedding day.  But sometimes the bridal gown does not accommodate a necklace so earrings provide the jewelry for the special day.  Brides that choose faux pearl earrings usually prefer modest size and a realistic look for the wedding day jewelry.  Classic post earrings or modest drop earrings provide elegance in moderate to understated size.  Earrings with domed faux pearl in crystal-laden frames are the utmost in classic design and please today’s brides with a timeless look.

BRIDAL BRACELETS

Finally, bridal bracelets are all the more important in the 21st century when bracelets are dominating the runways and show up in every fashion magazine.  In bridal jewelry bracelets need the utmost of elegance and what delivers it better than pearl.

Every type of pearl we have covered contributes to this category.  Faux pearl in designs that include rhinestone are very popular and these can be single strand or five strands wide.

Glass pearl, freshwater pearl, and ABS pearl can all provide glamorous bracelets for the special day.  Bracelets are also wonderful bridesmaid gifts so this part of your formal accessories can generate multiple sales.

Prepare for a resurgence of faux pearl bridal jewelry by mixing the design in your wedding accessories.  Thumb through a bridal magazine and you will see the renaissance of faux pearl bridal jewelry.
