Another spectacular social season got underway in New York last month, marked with much glitter and excitement by the annual Young Fellows Ball. Sponsored by Monique Lhuillier, the Frick Museum event was themed “Les Liaisons Dangereuses,” giving license to an elite crowd to dress up wildly and have marvelous fun.
Perhaps the most fascinating aspect of the Ball involved decorative masks…all manner of them…creating secrets and entertaining personalities over those really there. “In these times, it’s nice for everyone to have an escape,” Lhuillier smiled, as she reveled in her last night in New York, before leaving for Dubai.
YOU CAN HAVE A DELICIOUS ESCAPE, TOO. HOW ABOUT PLANNING A PARTY AROUND THESE COLORFUL MASKS?
- Ladies Venetian-style butterfly mask with elegant papier mache appearance.
- Pink marabou feathers create a puff of soft colors and gold Lurex adds a metallic shine to these beautiful masquerade masks.
VALUE FOR A PRICE
AccessoriesTheShow and Accessories Circuit attracted a conservative crowd during its recent run in New York. But while there was much emphasis on price, buyers keenly searched out exhibitors’ wares looking for strong fashion pieces with high design value.
“One thing the recession has done is provide an opportunity for designers to create really exciting collections using the limited resources they have,” declared one retailer, noting that she was trying to follow the trends promoted in national fashion magazines.
Basia Polowska, designer for Basia, a jewelry company that specializes in oversized pieces, said most buyers were focused on the bigger and brighter parts of her collection, looking for distinct and very fashion-forward pieces.
THE BIGGER THE BETTER…AND WOW! DO THESE PIECES FIT THE TREND:
- A cut glass pendant in a fringe of colorful beads gives this large choker a real “statement” look.
- Using all natural materials, this bold necklace features round wood beads and cocoa wood beads in a rich, imposing design.
“People today want to feel happy, unique,” the designer said. “They are buying pieces that are versatile and fun.”
Expanding into a global reach were a number of international companies participating in the Box, a trendy French trade show recently bowing to American audiences in New York. Muriel Piaser, director of the Box, said that the show was focusing on young, talented, high-fantasy designers.
One of those design newcomers was a firm from Florida called Cleo & Cat. Among the products shown were brushed gold plated cuffs with semi-precious stones and oversized pendants in black clay.

Not to be missed at the Accessories show was a hair accessories designer, who happily bragged that her business was doing very well. “When people have no money,” a Toronto retailer philosophized, “they want to put color in their hair.” Strange…
