Designer Wang says he’s out to change the entire way people interpret jewelry

ALEXANDER WANG IS ABOUT TO UNVEIL an exciting new collection of men’s silver earrings and cuffs, created in collaboration with Brooklyn-based jewelry designer Paris Kahn of Abraxas Rex.  The new collection will be small, just four styles, but if the early whispers are true, it is going to be a blockbuster, not just for men, but for jewelry in general.

“We’re working on ways of wearing earrings that aren’t typical,” Wang says.  “We want to push the meaning of embellishment and how people interpret jewelry.”  That’s a big order!

Even though there is a lot of secrecy surrounding the earrings, this we do know:  The earrings aren’t for pierced ears, and they aren’t clip on. We’ll apparently know more in a few days but for now, start guessing.

Another thing Wang will admit is that the collection will be sleek and streamlined. You can also be sure the price tag will be way up there – super-couture level, like its designer.

We’re discussing it here because of its possible effect on jewelry in general.

WANG COMPARES the new jewelry to his fall ’09 apparel collection which he says will be more constructed and tailored and less slouchy or thrown-on.  On one hand the designer says he wanted the jewelry to be ‘very industrial,” but on the other hand, he also talks about its being “very animalistic.”

IF YOU’RE ALSO INTO JEWELRY WITH NO SMALL AMOUNT OF TESTOSTERONE BEHIND IT, TRY CHECKING THESE OUT:

  • Men’s solitaire CZ rings, heavy gold electroplate.

Tina Turner & Mad Max Films

IF YOU’RE ALSO INTERESTED IN WHERE TRENDS START, pay attention to Wang for this, too.  The designer claims he took inspiration for his collection from Tina Turner’s third installment of the “Mad Max.” film series (1985’s Mad Max Beyond the Thunderdome).  In the sci-fi series, Turner plays a post-apocalyptic leader replete with chain mail dresses and metal accessories.  “Edgy,” as one trade publication called it.

“The shapes we’re working with could just as easily be from a thousand years from now or a thousand years ago,” partner Kahn says of the jewelry. Strange!

INDIA-BORN CHEF COOKS UP HOT JEWELRY LINE

Padma Lakshmi is cashing in on the trend toward India-inspired accessories.  The host of Bravo’s “Top Chef” program has concocted a fascinating line of jewelry with a strong Middle Eastern flavor and no small amount of food images, like pods, seeds, lentils, cloves, even fish bones.  The collection is in 10- and 14-karat gold and is carefully designed to go from day to evening wear with ease.

Delicate arm cuffs as well as four-row gold cuffs are important collection pieces, along with long chain necklaces and dangling gold chandelier earrings. There is also a subcollection called Nav, which takes inspiration from an ancient Hindu philosophy for balancing the life force.  It includes all nine essential stones for achieving this balance, including sapphires, diamonds and pearls.  “Stones have a powerful, energetic pull,” she says.

“In India, jewelry is seen as a symbol of beauty and wealth,” Lakshmi says.  “So much so that even a woman’s dowry is often in the form of jewelry.”

Lakshmi’s new collection will retail from $375 to $6,000.

YOU CAN GET THE SAME INDIA-INSPIRED STYLE WITHOUT THE PRICE:

  • Shimmering chandelier earrings in glimmering clear, red and jet colors. Fabulous!

  • Chandelier earrings in clear crystal with antique silver finish setting.
